Grading the Assignments

This is set to change Summer of 2022. Information is not verified or tested.
Google Assignments LTI 1.3 + Canvas SpeedGrader
Towards the end of June, Google will begin rolling out an upgrade for the Google Assignments LTI 1.3 tool to have the same SpeedGrader capabilities as the old tool. When creating a new assignment with Google Assignments, instructors will have the option to grade student grade work using SpeedGrader or Google’s grading interface. This will enable instructors to attach files to make a copy/template for each student and/or use Google’s originality reports feature for plagiarism analysis while also providing instructors flexibility on their grading interface of choice.

When students are done with the assignment, grade it in the Assignment Window, looks like Google Classroom. Click on the assignment and then you will see where you can click on a student to view their submission. It will open what looks very similar to Speedgrader. Grades will go over into Canvas grades when you put the grade in the Google grade location and click return to give the assignment back to the student.

Google Assignments - Grade

Still want to use Speedgrader Only

You can trick the system by using Google Drive access link and changing the URL to copy so that each student gets their own copy of the file. You then would need to make the submission type in Assignments be upload. Students would need to upload their file to you and then you would be able to go to Speedgrader and view the files once uploaded. Here are detailed directions about how to do this: https://support.google.com/edu/assignments/answer/10106138

Troubleshooting:

If the Google file is missing something and you want the student to access a new copy!

Notice the text is missing on 1 to 3. First try to undo what the student did. If you can’t undo, then you will need to get the student to open a new copy of the file.

Close the file (don’t submit) then look for the remove under the three dots. This will move the file to the trash. You still must take the file out of the trash or it will just open the file from the trash.

Next click on the hamburger (three lines) in the top left. Change view to the trash. Find the same file in trash and click the three dots to delete the file from trash.

Now go back over to the assignment and click on “Get a new copy.”
