BrainPop

Creating a New Teacher Account

Always access your BrainPop teacher account from inside Canvas. Click on BrainPop in the left navigation menu. If you don’t already have an individual account, you will receive a few prompts the first time you use the Canvas launch link.

  1. The prompt will ask ‘Who are you?’ Choose I’m a Teacher.
  2. Next, you will be prompted for your school’s Educator Code.  Ask Mrs. Flanary to email you the code.
  3. Enter the Educator Code and click Submit. Your teacher account will be created and you will be logged in.

Linking an Existing Teacher Account

If you created an individual teacher account before Canvas integration was set up, you will be prompted to enter your individual username and password the first time you click on BrainPop from the Canvas left main navigation menu. It may also ask you to for a verification code which they email you.

Creating Classes

If you haven’t created your first class yet, here’s how:

  1. Go to Canvas and click on BrainPop in the left main navigation to login to your account automatically.
  2. Click Dashboard at the top of the screen.
  3. Click New Class.
  4. Create a class name. A class code will be automatically generated for you.
  5. Click Create Class.
  6. Once you do this, you’ll get a pop-up confirming the successful creation of the class. Notice the class code which shows in the class confirmation.

Students will use the Class Code to join your class, so have it ready to share with them. They are now ready to create their accounts and join the class you have created.

Creating and Linking Student Accounts

When your students log in through Canvas by clicking on BrainPop in the left main navigation menu, they can expect to take the following steps:

  1. They will be prompted to enter a Class Code, which you received when you set up the class as outlined above.
  2. Enter the code and click Submit. The student account will be automatically created and linked to their LMS or learning platform login. They are now able to log in via the LMS or learning platform without needing an additional username or password.

Using the Tool in Canvas

Teachers can use the tool in three different ways in Canvas. It can be embedded in an Assignment or in a Module within the Canvas course.   Or, you can have students access their dashboard with assignments by clicking on BrainPop in the Canvas left main navigation menu.

 1. Using the main navigation menu:

Create assignment first via logged into Canvas, click BrainPop to login as teacher and create assignment for class.
Direct students to click on BrainPop in the main navigation menu by either adding an image of the assignment on a page telling them to complete the assignment or adding directions to an announcement.
Students click on dashboard to access the assignment you created.
Teachers go back to BrainPop in the main navigation menu to view grades.

2.  Create an Assignment within Canvas for the BrainPop Assignment – I did not find grades this way in Speed grader.  I will email and question.

  1. To embed in an Assignment, click Add Assignment. Add a title and instructions to the body of the assignment.
  2. Scroll down to submission type and select External Tool. Then click Find, and select the BrainPOP tool.
  3. After adding the Assignment title and desired detail, click Save.
  4. If you are accessing the BrainPOP tool, the topic selector for BrainPOP will appear.
  5. Choose a topic by searching with keywords, or browsing the subject areas.
  6. After selecting your topic, you can publish your assignment. When the assignment is accessed, the teacher or student will be launched and logged into the selected topic page.

3.  Rich Text Editor and Course Navigation Link – I did not find grades in speedgrader this way.  I will email and question them.

The Canvas app also includes a Rich Text Editor and/or course navigation link to our Canvas LTI integration.

You can use the More External Tools blue dropdown arrow to select and embed BrainPOP topic LTI links directly into your Canvas assignments, rather than selecting the external tool submission type below the editor.

The dropdown will call it 20 21 BrainPop.  This way you don’t create your assignment within BrainPop first.  You search for the assignment while creating the Canvas assignment.  I did not see where grades were saved this way.  It should have saved grades.  I might have done it wrong.

You can use the Rich Text Editor to select and embed BrainPOP topic LTI links directly into your Canvas assignments, rather than selecting the external tool submission type below the editor.
There is also a link along the left hand side, which will provide single sign-on to the BrainPOP homepage.
1. Click the Rich Text Editor to bring up a modal with our topic selector.
2. Select a topic to embed a link in your assignment.

3. After publishing, the link will provide SSO directly to the selected topic.
