Hello! My name is Joshua Baskin and I am the Head Band Director at Glen Rose Junior High. We are getting excited for next year's beginner band! We have already started the process of getting students placed on an instrument. If your student missed our instrument try out night earlier this month, we will be visiting with them during their music class this week. All students who tried out an instrument will be given a letter letting them know what instrument they will be playing next year by Thursday of this week. Also, on Friday, May 16th from 3:45-6pm, we have invited our instrument supplier, The Band Wagon, to come to GRIS to provide parents with an opportunity to purchase or rent an instrument and supplies for their students. We strive to keep costs low, and The Band Wagon has several cost-effective options to help make providing an instrument more financially feasible. If your student did not sign up for band on their course selection sheet, it is not too late! We can easily change their course selection sheet for them. Joining the 6th grade beginning band is a fun and exciting way to start middle school—and it also helps students do better in school! Studies show that students who participate in music programs like band score higher on standardized tests and are more likely to be ready for college. In fact, music students often score around 20-30 points higher in math and reading than their peers who don’t play an instrument. Being in band also builds responsibility, teamwork, and confidence—all skills that help students succeed in school and beyond. Plus, it's a great way to make new friends and be part of something special. Come join the band and discover the power of music!
