The competition, which ran from September 20- November 15, 2019, is intended to put a spotlight on cybersecurity topics and best practices, and to encourage young students to become cyber-aware.

“The Texas Department of Information Resources PSA competitions aim to raise early awareness of cybersecurity and pique student interest in the cybersecurity career field. These videos share information to keep us safe and protected while using the internet. As we continue to see an increase in cyber incidents, we want to equip the public with knowledge to protect their digital information,” said Texas Department of Information Resources Chief Information Security Officer Nancy Rainosek.

The competition was open to all Texas high school students from grades 9-12. Students formed teams and created a 30-second video that focused on one of three topics: hacking, social media, or phishing. Winners were selected for each category, and the highest scoring entry was named the overall winner of the competition.

This year DIR received 46 submissions and hopes participation continues to grow in the years to come. The next iteration of Texas DIR Cybersecurity Awareness PSA Competition opens in September 2020.
